Angiogram

What is an Angiogram and How is it Performed?

An angiogram is a diagnostic procedure that visualizes blood vessels to identify blockages or abnormalities. At Bay Vascular Surgery, we perform this procedure by inserting a catheter into an artery, usually in the groin or arm, and injecting a contrast dye. This dye highlights the blood vessels on X-ray images, allowing us to assess blood flow and detect any issues.

Why Would I Need an Angiogram?

You may need an angiogram if you experience symptoms like chest pain, shortness of breath, or leg pain, which could indicate conditions such as coronary artery disease or peripheral arterial disease. At Bay Vascular Surgery, we use angiograms to diagnose and evaluate these conditions, helping us determine the best treatment plan, whether it’s angioplasty, stent placement, or surgery.

What Can I Expect with this Procedure?

During the procedure, you might feel a warm sensation as the dye is injected, but it is generally painless. Our team at Bay Vascular Surgery takes all necessary precautions to ensure your comfort and safety, closely monitoring you for any potential complications, such as bleeding, infection, or allergic reactions.

What is the Recovery Like?

Recovery from an angiogram is typically swift. At Bay Vascular Surgery, we recommend resting for several hours post-procedure to prevent bleeding from the catheter site. Most patients can return home the same day, with full recovery in a day or two. We provide detailed post-procedure instructions to ensure a smooth recovery, including avoiding strenuous activities temporarily.
